Hydrel Expands SAF Family with SAF Aurora

Patent-pending lighting technique blends wash and graze

Atlanta, GA, July 20, 2026 – Hydrel® (www.hydrel.com), an established innovator and provider of outdoor architectural, aquatic, and landscape lighting products, is pleased to announce the expansion of its SAF floodlight luminaire family with the introduction of SAF Aurora.

SAF Aurora features a patent-pending lighting technique that blends wash and graze using two beams within a single luminaire to create a refined, layered gradient effect. Inspired by the Aurora Borealis, the technique produces soft transitions, crisp edges, and layered depth. Integrated within the SAF floodlight platform, SAF Aurora is designed specifically for wall washing and column washing, bringing added depth and dimension to applications such as bridges, underdecks, transit hubs and terminals, ceilings, and canopies.

Precisely engineered optical overlays stack asymmetric accent and grazing beams to create controlled, vertical gradients with clarity and consistency. SAF Aurora offers three distributions:

  • Narrow provides the sharpest Aurora lighting effect, with a distribution that highlights square or circular columns and small facades;
  • Medium delivers a balanced coverage for mid-scale facades and architectural elements; and
  • Wide is tailored for broad, seamless coverage across wide facades, while maintaining a refined gradient effect.

SAF Aurora is available with SAF7, SAF14, and SAF28 floodlights and as part of the family, offers the same robust features including an IP68 rating, Flow-Thru technology, Taper-Lock technology, and RGBW Quad Tech. With a choice of knuckle or yoke mountings, the SAF is suitable for a variety of applications, including ground, wall, pole, and stanchion.

Hydrel will be introducing an SAF Aurora Visualizer. This will enable lighting designers to experiment with the new lighting technique and better understand how it will behave on different facades.

All Hydrel luminaires are assembled in America and comply with the Buy America(n) Act (BAA) and Build America, Buy America (BABA) government procurement requirements under FAR, DFARS, and DOT.
